Addictions

Addiction Services promotes the health of individuals, families and communities by providing prevention and health promotion programs and treatment services related to drugs (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs) and gambling. The goal is to maintain or improve health and reduce the harm associated with drugs and gambling.

Addiction Services provides a variety of programs including:

Withdrawal Management (Detox) located at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital helps people who need supportive counseling and medical assistance to deal with the physical and mental withdrawal stages of dependency and addiction.

Addiction Education Program: A short-term program provided on an outpatient basis at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital helps individuals understand substance abuse, relapse signs and symptoms and early coping strategies to avoid harmful involvement with alcohol, tobacco or gambling.

Structured Treatment Program:  This long-term residential treatment (located in Middleton) is for those who are experiencing more severe and chronic substance misuse problems. Click here for more information. Click here for a schedule of residential, education and treatment programs offered at Soldier's Memorial Hospital.

Prevention and Health Promotion Programs: A range of programs is available for individuals, families, schools and communities to foster supportive environments and healthy choices regarding drugs and gambling. Program areas include: education and training for the public, students, teachers, parents and professionals; community development; advocacy; and policy development.

Counseling Services: These allow people to access information and treatment in communities throughout the District.  Services include: community-based counseling (by appointment) for adults, school-based education and counseling for adolescents, nicotine addiction treatment and women’s services.

Specialized services are also provided for particular populations such as women, adolescents and people convicted of impaired driving offences.
