Auxiliaries

Auxiliaries at all three of our hospitals work to improve the care and comfort of patients and enhance the programs and services offered in the District. Members dedicate hundreds of volunteer hours annually to raise funds for much-needed equipment and also provide a number of valuable services such as the operation of Gift Shops (See Gift Shops) at all three facilities and the Daisy at SSRH. Continuing Care (formerly called Home Care)

Continuing Care is a branch of the Department of Health providing access to:

  • home care services such as home support, nursing and oxygen services

  • long term care (such as nursing home or residential care facility)

  • protection for vulnerable adults

Within the District, Continuing Care staff have offices in Queens General, South Shore Regional and Fishermen’s Memorial in addition to offices in Chester and the Town of Bridgewater. Anyone can make a referral by calling toll free 1-800-225-7225. This number operates daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Once a referral is received, a care coordinator may arrange to do an assessment, which involves looking at what services are appropriate to meet your needs.

Foundations

Within the District there are two Foundations, the Health Services Foundation and the Queens General Hospital Foundation, which raise money to purchase much-needed equipment and to support hospital programs. Your contribution will help our staff continue a long-standing tradition of quality care.

All donations are tax deductible and official income tax receipts will be issued.

Health Services Foundation of the South Shore

The Health Services Foundation of the South Shore promotes and supports South Shore Regional and Fishermen’s Memorial hospitals in the delivery of enhanced health care through fundraising and advocacy.

HSF was formed in 1993 by the merger of the South Shore Regional Hospital Foundation and the Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital Society. Since that time, the non-profit charitable organization has contributed more than $3.5 million to the hospitals for enhanced programs and leading edge equipment.

Gifts can be designated to an area of your choice.  To make a donation to the Health Services Foundation visit the Foundation Office at SSRH or the Business Office at FMH, call 543-8065, or mail your donation to:

Volunteer Services

Within South Shore Health, hundreds of volunteers give generously of their time and talents to improve quality of care and to assist patients and staff. You will recognize many of these volunteers by their distinctive Red Jackets or Aprons. These volunteers perform a number of essential duties throughout the hospitals. Some areas where you will see these volunteers in action are on the nursing units, at the information desks, in ambulatory care and Rehabilitation Services. To become a volunteer, contact Volunteer Services at 543-4603 extension 2365. Click Red Coats for more information.

Our Public Health Team also relies on volunteers to help make their programs successful. Those volunteers include the more than 75 parents who parents who distribute fluoride to students as part of the Fluoride Mouth Rinse program, the hundreds of volunteers who are trained to recognize and look for lice in schools and the more than 800 students who help organize annual School Health Fairs. Volunteers also support the influenza program by helping with consent forms and registration at community clinics and KATS (Kids Against Tobacco Smoke) program, which involves about 80 volunteer peer helpers and many parents. Community members also help deliver Just for Girls, a program for Grade 5\6 girls to talk about issues, concerns and pressures they face and drive participants to Teen Prenatal Classes and cook a meal for them. Others give their time, talent and energy by serving on various groups and committees including the Breastfeeding Working Group, Heart Health Action teams and Safe Communities.
